When the Indian government supports China on the Tibet issue, it leaves me cringing. I do not claim to have followed it very closely nor do I have enough grasp of the issue. But, I can't understand why the Indian government maintains that Tibet is an internal issue of China. Is it because of the skeletons in our own backyard? Keeki brought forward a valid point recently that unless we do something about Kashmir, we do not have a moral right to point a finger at China.
I disagree. I would rather have an international community that proactively points fingers. It would be even better if somebody pointed a few fingers at us. Its time that we stopped being diplomatic on such issues of prime importance. Its time that we stopped escaping from international scrutiny by using the internal issue excuse
In this era of globalization can we continue to ignore what is cooking in our neighborhood? Is it because we are scared of screwing up our economic ties with China? Or is it because we know in our hearts that we just cannot today question the Chinese behemoth? Is it fair on our part to just keep on turning a blind eye towards the continued oppression of Tibetans?
I seriously do not understand parts of Indian foreign policy at the moment. As I see it today, India is just scared of rubbing anybody on the wrong side. While China keeps on blatantly claiming Arunachal Pradesh to be a part of their territory without bothering about ties with India, we think twice before saying anything that might make the dragon angry. Or probably Arunachal is too inconsequential in New Delhi's larger and long term plans. That is if they have any on this issue that might someday just snowball into a major conflict.
Personally, I feel ashamed to be an Indian given that the self proclaimed land of righteousness, for the lack of political will, is supporting China on the Tibet issue. It goes grossly against whatever India has stood for. Especially appalling is the communist led state governments [read comrades of Kerela and West Bengal] that have unequivocally been backing China. Instead of rationally analyzing the situation, they feel its their moral duty to blindly support anything that the Red regime does. Sometimes, I doubt whether they actually understand communism in its right essence or just use the ideology to get to power.
The ironic part was the whole controversy surrounding the otherwise majestic Olympic torch relay which has always been awe inspiring. A celebration of the great Olympic spirit of harmonious and healthy competition has been marred by the high handed Chinese attitude. Imagine the furious residents of San Francisco who lined the streets for hours only to realize that the torch relay path had been changed secretly to keep the protesters at bay! What is a torch relay without the cheering of audience that makes Olympics such a grand spectacle? The French gentleman, de Coubertin would be surely turning in his grave in Laussane right now.

Fantastic! I completely agree with u! Its high time India did something constructive about the Tibet issue. India needs to realize that negotiation is the only way out. Infact we can take advantage of the situation by telling China that we wil help them out if they clear out the Arunachal issue with us. Maybe its not morally correct...but then Im tired of India always playin the goody-goody!
